How to Check if Your Diamond is Loose

The worst day of owning a ring comes when you look down and you notice that your diamond is missing. One of the best ways to prevent this is to regularly check if your ring has any loose stones. In this video we’ll show you two easy ways you can tell if your diamond (or other gemstone) is loose at home.

  1. Hold the ring close to your ear in one hand and gently tap the bottom of it with the other. Listen for a faint rattling sound.
  2. Use a pen cap to gently prod each gemstone looking for a small amount of movement.

If you do find a loose gemstone in your ring, we recommend you stop wearing it immediately and bring it in so one of our jewelers can check it for you. Most of of the time, a simple tightening is all that is needed, but in some cases, the stone is loose because the metal holding it has worn away. In these cases more work (like retipping) will be needed to secure the stone in the ring again.
